In early July 2011, a loaded VENUS Instrument Platfrom (VIP) was deployed for the Strait of Georgia Central site from the R/V Thomas G. Thompson. This image shows the webcam (central), bounded by two acoustic Doppler instruments dedicated to measuring ocean currents. To the left is a downward facing Nortek Vector ADV, with its sensing volume less than a metre off the bottom to measure near bottom flows and turbulence. To the right is one of VENUS’ 150kHz ADCP, which uses acoustics to measure currents above the platform, in distinct layers all the way to the ocean surface.
