5 Years and Counting

On June 22, 2011, VENUS celebrates the 5th anniversary of the Online Data Portal. It’s been a challenging endeavour and exciting project. VENUS would like to thank the Data Management and Archive (DMAS) group that serves VENUS and NEPTUNE Canada for helping us support our user community.

Where is VENUS in Saanich Inlet?
The Saanich Inlet array of VENUS was the first location to begin streaming data in February 2006. Then, in 2008 and 2009, two more seafloor sites, in the Strait of Georgia, were activated on the VENUS network. As of June 2011, five years later, VENUS is a fully operational, web-enabled ocean research facility.

Online streaming of ocean conditions on VENUS began in June 2006. Since then, the VENUS data archive has collected and delivered, over the Internet, terabytes of data from dozens of sensors. High resolution and quality data are critical for researchers, while online delivery and free access makes ocean research possible in places that are far from the coast.

Live Ocean Data from VENUS: available from VENUS since June 2006.
