On January 7th, the VENUS Team successfully recovered the Ocean Tracking Network’s VR4 fish receiver test moorings. For several months the OTN Team (at Dalhousie University) have been remotely monitoring communications between the fish receivers and an acoustic modem connected to the VENUS Node at 95m depth. The OTN is a global environmental research initiative that works on technology of comprehensive monitoring of the movements and migrations of marine animals.
Just before Duncan Bates (OTN) heard the dinner call at home in Halifax, he had sent commands to acoustic releases on both moorings. Minutes later and 4,500 km away, the VENUS team witnessed the surfacing of two moorings in Saanich Inlet. These moorings were recovered without incident and are now on their way back to Dalhousie University in Halifax.
