VENUS semi-annual September maintenance cruise complete

VENUS has just completed our Semi-annual September maintenance cruise on the CCGS John P. Tully with the CSSF ROPOS.

As is often the case there were challenges, successes, and more challenges. For the first time we serviced every single deployed platform, although some did not get re-deployed. We recovered, serviced, and redeployed 3 VENUS instrument platforms from Saanich Inlet, and the Strait of Georgia Central and East sites. We also recovered and re-deployed the Camera platform and systems in Saanich Inlet. We recovered two hydrophone arrays needing upgrades from the Central and East sites in SoG, and deployed a refurbished hydrophone array with three different sensor units from High-Tech, Burns, and Reson at the Eastern SoG site.

We also redeployed a stand-alone VIP platform at 40m depth in the Fraser River Delta area with battery and internal recording instruments in support of our Delta Dynamics research. The prototype seismic liquefaction in situ penetrometer (SLIP), test deployed in February 2009, was also successfully recovered and now is under evaluation for design and technical improvements for future deployments.

Data streams from all the sensors are now being evaluated, and some new instruments (Multi-frequency Water Column Profiler: MF-ZAP) will be coming to the web site soon.
