It has been a long and exciting journey and we would like to thank everyone who took part in our effort to bring Ocean Science closer to research community.
As of September of 2008, VENUS is fully functional being deployed in 2 geographic locations – Saanich Inlet and Strait of Georgia featuring:
- 50km of fibre-optic telecom cable laid at 100m to 300m depths to provide electric power and two-way communication
- Three (3) Nodes (underwater LAN ports) with 13 wetmateable ports to connect research instruments
- Eight (8) seafloor research platforms connected in one network and streaming live data from
- 47 instruments with over 120 sensors
- Two (2) shore stations with monitoring, control, and data communication systems
- Data Management and Archiving System (DMAS) with over 1.5TB of data freely available to researchers and public
