Watching the Fishes (Engineering)

Around the middle of December the CS Wave Venture, a cable maintenance ship operated by marine services company Global Marine, will ease away from its berth at Ogden Point, Victoria, on Vancouver Island just off the west coast of Canada and head off on another mission. But on this occasion it will not, as usual, be aiming for the deep ocean to retrieve and repair a fibre optic cable from several thousand metres below. Instead it will sail just a few miles northwards to an inlet called Saanich Sound, where it will deploy an array of scientific equipment on the seabed at depth of a mere 95 metres.
